Spice, Tea & Island Tables

An island understood one market, spice garden, tea leaf and shared table at a time.

Sri Lanka through food, tea and regional kitchens

Sri Lankan food changes with landscape, memory and community. Coconut and seafood belong to the coast; grains, lake fish and forest ingredients speak to the dry zone; Kandy brings market produce and ceremonial traditions; the highlands place tea at the centre of an entire social history.

This journey is designed around kitchens rather than restaurant collecting. Guests visit markets with context, cook with hosts, taste at source and leave enough unscheduled meals to follow personal appetite. Every food experience should feel relational and specific, never staged as a performance.

Your itinerary

  1. 1

    Arrival with no forced feast

Private airport transfer to Cinnamon Lakeside. Rest after the flight. The host meets guests briefly to discuss allergies, dietary practice, spice tolerance and food interests so later experiences can be adapted properly.

    Stay · Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo

Meals · Dinner at the hotel, subject to arrival time

  2. 2

Markets, migration and the Colombo table

Begin at a wholesale or neighbourhood market with a food host, tasting fruit, short eats and regional staples in sensible portions. Continue through Pettah and selected historic quarters to understand how trade and migration shaped the city's food. The afternoon is free. In the evening, enjoy a curated Sri Lankan menu with each dish introduced without turning dinner into a lecture.

    Stay · Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo

Meals · Breakfast at the hotel and hosted dinner

  3. 3

    North through coconut country

Drive to Sigiriya in approximately 4.5-5 hours. Stop with a small-scale producer or trusted roadside kitchen for a simple regional lunch, avoiding commission-led tourism stops. Arrive at Aliya Resort & Spa and join a short garden or ingredient orientation before the included dinner at the hotel.

Stay · Aliya Resort & Spa

Meals · Breakfast, local lunch and dinner at the hotel

  4. 4

An ancient landscape, a village kitchen

Climb Sigiriya early, return for breakfast and rest. Later, visit Hiriwaduna Village for a guided rural excursion and cooking session using seasonal vegetables, grains, coconut and spice. Participate at a comfortable level, share the meal with hosts and discuss how dry-zone farming shapes what appears on the table; any lake crossing operates only when conditions are suitable.

Stay · Aliya Resort & Spa

Meals · Breakfast, hosted local lunch and dinner at the hotel

  5. 5

    Matale spices and Kandy's hills

Travel to Kandy in approximately 3 hours. En route, meet a carefully vetted grower or botanical interpreter near Matale to understand spice plants, harvesting and genuine culinary use. Continue to Mountbatten Bungalow. The evening includes a light tasting of hill-country flavours or a chef conversation, depending on property arrangements.

    Stay · Mountbatten Bungalow

Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel

  6. 6

    Kandy market to kitchen

Walk Kandy's central market with a local cook, selecting produce and discussing regional varieties. Continue to a private cooking demonstration or participatory lunch. Rest in the afternoon, then visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic near evening to see how food, flowers and ritual intersect in the city's cultural life.

    Stay · Mountbatten Bungalow

Meals · Breakfast, hosted lunch and dinner at the hotel

  7. 7

    Into the tea valley

Drive to Mandaram Nuwara in approximately 3-3.5 hours. Stop for viewpoints and seasonal produce, then check in at Tea & Experience Factory. Join a short estate walk and introductory tea tasting. Dinner is kept simple so the next day's full tea programme remains the focus.

Stay · Tea & Experience Factory

Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel

  8. 8

    Leaf, craft and cup

Spend the morning inside the estate's leaf-to-cup journey: plucking, factory processing, grading and guided tasting. After lunch, join a cooking demonstration or short waterfall walk. A second, more focused tea tasting can compare elevations and processing styles without overloading the day.

Stay · Tea & Experience Factory

Meals · Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel

  9. 9

    From mist to salt air

Depart for Weligama, approximately 5.5-6.5 hours with a substantial lunch and comfort break. The landscape moves from tea slopes through the southern interior to the coast. Check in at Parangi Weligama Bay and leave the evening completely free after the long drive.

    Stay · Parangi Weligama Bay

Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel

  10. 10

Cinnamon, lagoon and the coastal kitchen

Travel to Koggala for a combined lagoon and cinnamon-country experience. Meet growers, see how bark is peeled and quilled, and share a home-style lunch using southern ingredients. Return to Weligama for rest. A seafood market interpretation can be added early or late according to landing times, but no purchase is required.

    Stay · Parangi Weligama Bay

Meals · Breakfast, local lunch and dinner at the hotel
