Signature Journey · 10 days / 9 nights

Ceylon in Full Colour

The island's greatest contrasts, composed into one unforgettable first journey.

A signature first journey through Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is at its most compelling when its contrasts are allowed to unfold naturally. This journey moves from Colombo's contemporary energy to an ancient rock citadel, a hill capital shaped by ritual, cloud-bound tea country, the open theatre of Yala and a final pause where river and sea meet.

Designed as a confident introduction rather than a checklist, the route pairs landmark experiences with quieter moments: breakfast beneath tropical trees, a guided market walk, the scent of tea at source and an unhurried coastal finale. It is the clearest expression of the Ceylon by Design promise - Sri Lanka, deeply designed.

Your itinerary

  1. 1

    Arrive gently in Colombo

Meet the Ceylon by Design airport representative and travel by private vehicle to central Colombo (approximately 45-90 minutes, traffic dependent). Check in and leave the day intentionally light. Later, take a short hosted orientation through the city's seafront and historic commercial quarter, or simply settle into the hotel gardens. A concise journey briefing is arranged before dinner so the pace, preferences and any dietary requirements are reconfirmed.

Meals · Dinner at the hotel, subject to arrival time

  2. 2

From city streets to the Cultural Triangle

After breakfast, leave Colombo for Sigiriya, allowing approximately 4.5-5 hours with comfort stops. En route, visit the Dambulla cave temple with a licensed guide; modest dress and shoes that are easy to remove are recommended. Continue through the dry-zone landscape and arrive at Aliya Resort & Spa in the late afternoon. The first sightline towards Sigiriya from the resort sets the tone for the days ahead. Evening at leisure.

Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel

  3. 3

    Sigiriya at first light

Begin early to climb Sigiriya before the midday heat. The guided visit traces the water gardens, frescoes, mirror wall and summit ruins while placing the fortress within the wider story of the ancient island. Return for a late breakfast and time by the pool. In the afternoon, continue to Hiriwaduna Village for a guided rural excursion with a gentle village walk, seasonal farming insight and a hosted local meal; any lake crossing operates only when water and weather conditions are suitable.

Meals · Breakfast, hosted local lunch and dinner at the hotel

  4. 4

Spice roads and the hill capital

Drive to Kandy in approximately 3 hours, pausing near Matale for a carefully selected spice and botanical interpretation rather than a sales-led stop. Arrive at Mountbatten Bungalow for lunch at leisure and a quiet afternoon. Towards evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic with a knowledgeable host, observing local etiquette and the rhythm of worship. A short walk beside Kandy Lake follows before returning to the bungalow.

  5. 5

Into the folds of tea country

Start with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, exploring its avenues, orchids and historic plant collections. Then travel into the highlands towards Mandaram Nuwara (approximately 3-3.5 hours, depending on road conditions). The road narrows as the air cools and peaks gather around the valley. Check in at Tea & Experience Factory and enjoy a guided introduction to the estate. The evening is reserved for a slow dinner and the stillness of the hills.

  6. 6

A long, beautiful road to the wild south

Join the property's leaf-to-cup experience after breakfast: walk through tea fields, learn how leaves are selected, see the working process and finish with a guided tasting. Depart late morning for Yala, a scenic drive of approximately 5-5.5 hours with a lunch stop and viewpoints where practical. Arrive at Cinnamon Wild before dusk. The transition from cool highlands to dry scrub is one of the journey's most striking changes. Settle in and listen as the landscape becomes active after dark.

Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel

  7. 7

    Yala, read slowly

Leave before sunrise with a private jeep and experienced naturalist for a half-day safari. The focus is not a single species chase, but reading the park: alarm calls, tracks, waterholes, birdlife, elephants and, with patience and luck, leopard. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Return for a late breakfast and a long midday rest. Near sunset, join a gentle nature walk or enjoy the resort's viewing areas, followed by dinner beneath the expansive southern sky.

  8. 8

    From wilderness to Bawa's coast

After breakfast, travel west towards Bentota in approximately 4.5-5 hours, using the southern expressway for the final section. Pause for lunch around Galle or Matara depending on timing, then continue to Cinnamon Bentota Beach. The resort's architecture, gardens and location between river and ocean make it a destination in its own right. The remainder of the afternoon is deliberately free for the beach, pool or spa.

  9. 9

A designed day by river and sea

Visit Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, on a hosted garden tour that reveals how landscape, architecture and tropical light were composed over decades. Return to the hotel for a relaxed lunch. Later, take a private mangrove boat journey on the Bentota River or meet local artisans for mask carving, weaving or coconut-leaf craft. End with an unhurried shoreline walk as the day cools.
