The Great Ceylon Compass
Sri Lanka at full scale: sacred north, eastern sea, highlands, wildlife and coast.
A grand passage from the north-west coast to the sacred north and southern sea
This is Sri Lanka read at full scale. The journey begins beside the north-western sea in Chilaw, follows Puttalam's lagoon country to Anuradhapura, then turns through Madhu and the islands of Jaffna before taking the Mullaitivu road to the eastern coast. From Trincomalee it bends inward through Habarana, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and Kitulgala before the highlands open into tea, rail and the mountain light of Ella.
The southern movement is deliberately gentler: Ravana Falls and Buduruwagala lead towards wildlife country, Kataragama adds a living sacred dimension, and Mirissa and Galle provide five restorative coastal nights before Colombo. Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and Thema Collection anchor the route wherever their portfolios fit; carefully selected alternatives are used where neither collection currently operates.

- Pace
- Expansive but balanced: thirteen bases, protected rest windows and three-night pauses in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Ella and Galle
Highlights
- Chilaw and Puttalam as a considered north-western opening.
- Delft, Nagadeepa, Point Pedro and Jaffna's culinary culture.
- The Mullaitivu road into three nights beside the eastern sea.
- Hiriwaduna, Pidurangala and Polonnaruwa with a hosted rice-and-curry lunch.

Your itinerary
1
Arrival on the Chilaw coast
Meet at Bandaranaike International Airport and travel directly to Chilaw, normally 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Check in at Anantaya Resort & Spa Chilaw, a carefully selected alternative used because Cinnamon and Thema do not currently operate here. If flight timing and guest energy allow, visit Munneswaram Kovil with respectful local interpretation; otherwise keep the first day free for rest beside the coast.
Stay · Anantaya Resort & Spa Chilaw
Meals · Dinner at the hotel, subject to arrival time
2
Puttalam landscapes and Anuradhapura
Travel north through the Puttalam district, pausing for a guided view of the lagoon landscape, salt pans or a locally appropriate community stop according to season and operating access. Continue inland to Anuradhapura and check in at Uga Ulagalla. In the cooler late afternoon, explore the sacred city with a licensed guide, prioritising Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya rather than attempting every monument in one visit.
Stay · Uga Ulagalla
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
3
Madhu on the road to Jaffna
Leave early if an Anuradhapura site remains, then turn north-west to the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu. Allow quiet time in the church precinct and respect current service, dress and photography guidance. Continue to Jaffna with a local lunch stop; total road time is usually 5-6 hours excluding the visit. Check in at Jetwing Jaffna and take only a short orientation walk if energy allows.
Stay · Jetwing Jaffna
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
4
Delft, Nagadeepa and the island horizon
Depart with a packed breakfast for Kurikadduwan. The preferred design combines Nagadeepa/Nainativu and Delft Island with pre-arranged ferry or private-boat coordination, a northern guide and a simple island lunch. Sea state, vessel schedules and harbour permissions may require reversing the order or choosing one island in depth. On return, pause at the Jaffna Fort and old harbour precinct and visit the Public Library if daylight and opening hours permit.
Stay · Jetwing Jaffna
Meals · Breakfast, local lunch and dinner at the hotel
5
Point Pedro and the flavours of the north
Travel to Point Pedro and the northern coastline with a Jaffna-based host, adding Keerimalai or another locally suitable stop according to road and worship conditions. Return through Nallur for temple interpretation, then explore the market, library and fort precinct at an unhurried pace. A hosted culinary experience introduces palmyrah, seafood, odiyal, crab curry and vegetarian specialities while respecting dietary preferences; the purpose is cultural context, not a rushed tasting checklist.
Stay · Jetwing Jaffna
Meals · Breakfast, hosted lunch and dinner at the hotel
6
The Mullaitivu road to the eastern sea
Leave Jaffna after breakfast and follow the Mullaitivu route towards Nilaveli and Trincomalee. This long but revealing transfer takes approximately 6-7 hours with selected pauses, moving through lagoons, farming settlements and the lesser-visited north-eastern coast. Lunch is taken at a vetted local restaurant. Arrive at Trinco Blu by Cinnamon and keep the evening free for the beach, pool and an early dinner.
Stay · Trinco Blu by Cinnamon
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
7
Koneswaram and Marble Beach
Begin in the cooler morning at Koneswaram Temple and the Shankari Devi shrine precinct, allowing worship time and a Fort Frederick walk without intruding on religious practice. After lunch and a rest, continue to Marble Beach when access, sea conditions and official operating arrangements are suitable. Swimming is optional; a quiet shoreline walk or resort time replaces the beach visit when conditions are poor.
Stay · Trinco Blu by Cinnamon
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
8
A protected Trincomalee day
Keep a third night so the eastern coast never feels like a transit stop. The base programme is deliberately open. Guests may rest or add a professionally operated Pigeon Island snorkelling trip, bay boat journey or fishing-community encounter, subject to sea state, park access, guest ability and environmental guidance. No marine sighting or access is guaranteed.
Stay · Trinco Blu by Cinnamon
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
9
Hiriwaduna and Pidurangala at sunset
Drive to Habarana in approximately 2-2.5 hours and check in at Aliya Resort & Spa. After lunch, join the Hiriwaduna Village excursion for a guided rural walk, seasonal lake crossing when safe, farming insight and hosted refreshments. Continue to Pidurangala for the late-afternoon climb and sunset view, subject to weather, daylight, footwear and mobility. Sigiriya remains an on-request sunrise alternative rather than being forced into this active day.
Stay · Aliya Resort & Spa - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast, hosted refreshments and dinner at the hotel
10
Polonnaruwa and an island table
Travel to Polonnaruwa for a privately guided circuit of the royal precinct, audience hall, stupas and Gal Vihara, using a vehicle and short walks to manage heat. Follow with a hosted Sri Lankan rice-and-curry lunch highlighting regional grains, vegetables, sambols and cooking traditions. Return by mid-afternoon. An Ayurveda massage may be added after a suitable rest; it is a wellness supplement, not medical treatment. A requested Sigiriya climb can operate at dawn with a revised schedule.
Stay · Aliya Resort & Spa - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast, hosted lunch and dinner at the hotel
11
Dambulla, craft and the road to Kandy
Leave Habarana for Kandy, stopping at Dambulla Cave Temple with a licensed guide and allowing for steps, heat and modest dress. Continue to a carefully vetted wood-carving studio focused on technique and cultural context without sales pressure. Reach Cinnamon Citadel Kandy after approximately 3.5-4.5 hours of travel and visits. Attend a concise traditional cultural dance performance in the early evening when the show schedule aligns.
Stay · Cinnamon Citadel Kandy
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
12
Thevawa and an optional Knuckles day
The base design protects a slower Kandy morning before a hosted visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the late-afternoon Thevawa period. A garden, market or artisan stop may be added. Active guests may instead choose a private Knuckles trek with naturalist, permits, packed lunch and a route matched to ability; it departs early and returns for the temple only when road and trail conditions make that realistic.
Stay · Cinnamon Citadel Kandy
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
13
Through Ginigathhena to Kitulgala
Travel through Ginigathhena to Kitulgala, allowing approximately 3-4 hours with scenic stops. After check-in and a light lunch, join a professionally operated white-water rafting session when water levels, age limits, health declarations and guide judgement permit. Helmets, buoyancy aids, qualified guides and a full safety briefing are mandatory. Non-rafters may choose a rainforest walk, birding session or a quiet afternoon beside the water.
Stay · Palmstone Retreat
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
14
From rainforest to Gregory Lake
Leave Kitulgala after breakfast and climb towards Nuwara Eliya in approximately 3-4 hours. Check in at Scottish Planter - Thema Collection and spend the late afternoon around Gregory Lake, choosing a gentle lakeside walk or private orientation rather than motorised activity. Adam's Peak is offered only as a seasonal one-night extension via Nallathanniya; it is not compressed into this transfer day.
Stay · Scottish Planter - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
15
Horton Plains at first light
Depart before dawn with a packed breakfast for Horton Plains National Park. Complete the World's End and Baker's Falls circuit only when trail, wind, mist and guest ability are suitable, allowing approximately 3-4 hours on foot plus transfers. A shorter viewpoint-and-tea-country alternative is retained for lower intensity. Return to Scottish Planter for a late lunch and quiet afternoon.
Stay · Scottish Planter - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast (or packed breakfast) and dinner at the hotel
16
The scenic train to Ella
Transfer to Nanu Oya station for the reserved scenic train towards Ella. Seat class, departure time and operating status must be reconfirmed; the private vehicle carries main luggage separately and remains the fallback if rail service changes. On arrival, check in at 98 Acres Resort & Spa. In the late afternoon, take a short Ella town walk with a local host, linking tea-country history with the town's contemporary life.
Stay · 98 Acres Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
17
Lipton's Seat and Adisham Bungalow
Leave early for Haputale and continue towards Lipton's Seat, using the final approach and walking plan best suited to current road and weather conditions. Visit Adisham Bungalow when its opening day and visitor rules permit, then return through tea country with a relaxed lunch stop. If mist closes the viewpoint or Adisham is shut, substitute a tea-estate experience and guided Haputale walk.
Stay · 98 Acres Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
18
Little Adam's Peak and Flying Ravana
Climb Little Adam's Peak in the cooler morning, choosing the full viewpoint or shorter approach according to mobility. Continue to Flying Ravana Adventure Park for a selected professionally operated activity, subject to age, height, weight, weather and medical restrictions. Non-participants may enjoy the viewpoint, spa or a guided Nine Arches Bridge visit. The afternoon is free before the route turns south.
Stay · 98 Acres Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
19
Ravana Falls, Buduruwagala and wildlife country
Descend from Ella and pause at the public Ravana Falls viewpoint only when road, weather and crowd conditions are safe. Continue to Buduruwagala Temple for a guided visit to the monumental rock-cut figures, then drive to Tissamaharama and check in at Kithala Resort - Thema Collection. The journey with visits normally requires 5-6 hours. Keep the evening quiet before the early safari.
Stay · Kithala Resort - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
20
Yala at dawn, Kataragama at dusk
Leave before sunrise with a private jeep and experienced driver-naturalist for a half-day Yala safari, subject to annual closures, gate access and wildlife movement. Focus on habitat and patient observation; sightings are never guaranteed. Return for a late breakfast and rest. In the late afternoon, visit Kataragama's multi-faith sacred precinct with respectful dress and enough time to observe worship without crowding devotees.
Stay · Kithala Resort - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
21
From the dry zone to Mirissa
Travel to Mirissa in approximately 3.5-4.5 hours with a considered lunch and comfort stop. Check in at Vis Ta Vie - Thema Collection and leave the afternoon deliberately free. This is a recovery day between safari and sea, with only a short shoreline orientation offered when guests want it.
Stay · Vis Ta Vie - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
22
Whale watching with restraint
Depart early with a licensed, professionally operated Mirissa whale-watching provider when sea state, seasonal guidance and harbour operations are suitable. Choose an operator that follows responsible approach distances and avoids crowding; sightings are never guaranteed. Return by late morning for breakfast or brunch and keep the rest of the day free. In unsuitable conditions, substitute a coastal nature, cinnamon or craft experience.
Stay · Vis Ta Vie - Thema Collection
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
23
Galle Fort in the evening light
Enjoy a slow morning, then travel to Galle in approximately 1-1.5 hours and check in at Jetwing Lighthouse. In the cooler late afternoon, explore Galle Fort with an architectural or cultural host, walking the ramparts, selected lanes and public heritage spaces without turning the visit into a retail route. Remain for sunset when weather permits.
Stay · Jetwing Lighthouse
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
24
Galle at an unhurried pace
Keep the day in and around Galle: choose a curated market-and-kitchen experience, a Bawa garden visit, a conservation-led coastal outing or independent time inside the fort. Retaining the day locally avoids unnecessary northbound backtracking and protects the value of the third Galle night.
Stay · Jetwing Lighthouse
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
25
Craft, coast or complete rest
Use the final full Galle day for a craft-and-design route, a relaxed coastal experience or uninterrupted time at Jetwing Lighthouse. After more than three weeks of travel, the uncommitted space is intentional and can be tailored to guest energy.
Stay · Jetwing Lighthouse
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
26
Madu River on the road to Colombo
Check out and travel north to Balapitiya for a professionally operated Madu River mangrove safari with correctly sized safety equipment and responsible interpretation. Continue directly to Cinnamon Grand Colombo, turning the wetland visit into an efficient en-route experience rather than a return journey from Galle.
Stay · Cinnamon Grand Colombo
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
27
Sacred, contemporary and designed Colombo
Use the final full day for a tailored city programme combining Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face, One Galle Face, selected local design stores, a gallery or museum and the public areas of Port City when open. Keep time for shopping, packing, spa or a hosted farewell meal.
Stay · Cinnamon Grand Colombo
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
28
Airport departure
Private transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport normally takes approximately 45-90 minutes, with a generous check-in buffer for the confirmed flight. For a very early departure, keep the final evening light. For a late flight, a day room, additional shopping window or curated lunch may be quoted without changing the core journey.
Stay · Departure
Meals · Breakfast at the hotel or packed breakfast, subject to departure time
Hotels are recommended or indicative stays, subject to availability and confirmed alternatives.
Madu River is scheduled on the Galle-to-Colombo transfer day, removing the unnecessary return drive from Galle.
