Footprints of the Wild
Four wild landscapes. One patient, deeply observed safari story.
A multi-ecosystem wildlife journey
This is not a single-park safari. It is a passage through distinct habitats: dry-zone forest, ancient reservoirs, Gal Oya's broad water, Yala's scrub and coast, Udawalawe's open grassland and the softer wetlands of the deep south.
The route uses naturalists and locally rooted stays to make wildlife more than a sighting list. Tracks, bird calls, forest use, community knowledge and conservation practice are woven into each day, with slower midday hours protecting both guest energy and the quality of each encounter.

Your itinerary
1
Arrive and reset
Airport welcome and private transfer to Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo. No fixed sightseeing is scheduled after a long-haul arrival. Meet the journey host for a safari briefing covering clothing, camera protection, respectful wildlife distances and the flexible nature of sightings.
Stay · Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo
Meals · Dinner at the hotel, subject to arrival time
2
North to forest and reservoir country
Drive to Habarana in approximately 4.5-5 hours with a relaxed lunch stop. Check in at Habarana Village by Cinnamon, whose low-rise layout and mature grounds introduce the dry-zone environment. Near sunset, join a guided bird walk around the property and reservoir edge, watching the transition from diurnal to evening activity.
Stay · Habarana Village by Cinnamon
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
3
Elephants, chosen by movement rather than map
Spend the morning on a naturalist-led walk, cycle or optional Sigiriya visit. Rest through the hottest part of the day. In the afternoon, safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park; the operating team selects the park according to current elephant movement, crowd conditions and access. Return after sunset for dinner and a short review of the day's observations.
Stay · Habarana Village by Cinnamon
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the lodge
4
Across the dry zone to Gal Oya
Depart for Gal Oya, allowing approximately 4.5-5.5 hours on secondary roads. The drive reveals lesser-visited agricultural and forest landscapes. Arrive at Wild Glamping Gal Oya, a remote retreat connected to the Rathugala Adivasi community. After settling into the tented lodge, walk the organic farm with a resident guide and listen to the evening soundscape. Connectivity is intentionally limited.
Stay · Wild Glamping Gal Oya
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the lodge
5
Safari by water
Begin early for a Gal Oya boat safari across Senanayake Samudraya, subject to water level and operating conditions. Scan islands and shorelines for elephants, deer, waterbirds and raptors; swimming elephants are a rare possibility, never a promise. Return for brunch and rest. Later, join a community-guided forest or village experience arranged respectfully through the property, focusing on local ecological knowledge rather than performance.
Stay · Wild Glamping Gal Oya
Meals · Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge
6
South to Yala
Travel from Gal Oya to Yala in approximately 4.5-5.5 hours, with pauses for landscape photography and lunch. Check in at Cinnamon Wild Yala near the park boundary. Keep the late afternoon unscheduled so guests can rest, watch the waterhole and prepare equipment for an early start.
Stay · Cinnamon Wild Yala
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the lodge
7
Reading Yala at dawn
Take a private half-day safari with an experienced driver-naturalist. Explore habitat zones rather than racing between reported sightings. Elephants, deer, crocodiles, raptors and smaller species are part of the story; leopard is possible but never guaranteed. Return for a late breakfast and rest. At dusk, choose a guided stargazing session or quiet observation from the lodge.

Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the lodge
8
From coastal scrub to open grassland
Drive to Udawalawe in approximately 2-2.5 hours. If timing aligns, stop at the Elephant Transit Home viewing area to learn about rehabilitation and release; there is no direct handling. Continue to Waraka, settle in and take a soft evening nature walk through the surrounding rural landscape.
Stay · Waraka
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
9
Udawalawe without hurry
Enter Udawalawe National Park at first light for a private safari. Its open terrain often allows longer, calmer observation of elephants, buffalo, deer and birds of prey. Return to the property by late morning. The afternoon remains free for rest, photography review or a short village cycle with a local guide. A second short safari can be added only when it offers genuine value.
Stay · Waraka
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the lodge
10
A soft landing on the south coast
Travel to Weligama in approximately 2.5-3 hours. An optional Koggala mangrove and cinnamon-country experience can be added when energy and timing allow; otherwise continue directly to Parangi Weligama Bay. The final afternoon is unstructured: ocean views, a shoreline walk and time to absorb the journey before departure.
Stay · Parangi Weligama Bay
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
11
Departure
Private transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport takes approximately 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic and the selected route. For early flights, an additional Colombo or airport-area night should be added during final costing.
