Where the East Turns Blue
From a fifth-century sky fortress to the calm blue bays of the east.
A summer journey to Sigiriya and Pasikuda
When the southwest monsoon reaches the western side of the island, Sri Lanka's east opens into a different season. This route follows the weather rather than fighting it: two nights beneath Sigiriya's ancient silhouette, then four nights beside Pasikuda's broad, shallow bay.
The cultural beginning gives the journey meaning; the beach stay gives it space. Maalu Maalu's village-inspired design and calm coastal setting suit travellers who want a genuine pause, with optional marine, cycling and community experiences introduced gently rather than scheduled into every hour.

Your itinerary
1
Arrival in Colombo
Private airport welcome and transfer to Cinnamon Grand Colombo. The day remains flexible for rest. If arrival is before midday, add a short, shaded city orientation in the late afternoon; otherwise meet the representative only for the journey briefing.
Stay · Cinnamon Grand Colombo
Meals · Dinner at the hotel, subject to arrival time
2
North to Sigiriya
Leave after breakfast for Sigiriya, allowing approximately 4.5-5 hours. Visit Dambulla's cave temple en route or reserve it for the next morning according to flight fatigue. Arrive at Aliya Resort & Spa, take in the long view towards the rock country and keep the evening free.
Stay · Aliya Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
3
The old citadel and village country
Climb Sigiriya early with a private guide, returning for a late breakfast and a long midday break. In the afternoon, take the Hiriwaduna Village excursion with a guided rural walk, seasonal farming insight, a hosted lunch and a lake crossing when conditions permit. A guided bird walk or seasonally selected elephant safari remains an optional enhancement. Families or guests avoiding the full climb can use a lower-level heritage interpretation and resort-based Sigiriya VR alternative where available.
Stay · Aliya Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast, hosted local lunch and dinner at the hotel
4
Across to the eastern shore
Drive to Pasikuda in approximately 3.5-4.5 hours, with a possible stop among Polonnaruwa's reservoirs or for lunch near the ancient city. Check in at Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa and settle into the slower rhythm of the bay. No activity is fixed after arrival.
Stay · Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
5
A full day of sea and shade
Breakfast and an entirely free morning. Enjoy the shallow bay only when sea and weather conditions are suitable, or spend time by the pool and spa. In the late afternoon, take an easy guided walk introducing the coast's fishing traditions and the resort's wadiya-inspired design.
Stay · Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
6
Choose your eastern story
Select one private experience according to interest: a cycling route through nearby villages, a Batticaloa heritage visit, a lagoon journey or a carefully operated marine excursion when conditions allow. Return by mid-afternoon and protect the remainder of the day for rest. Marine life and sea access always remain subject to weather and official guidance.
Stay · Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
7
Nothing that needs to be done
Keep the final beach day intentionally open. A spa treatment, cooking demonstration or private coastal meal can be pre-arranged, but the central promise is time: a late breakfast, a swim, a book and the changing light across Pasikuda Bay.
Stay · Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
8
Return west with a final pause
Depart after breakfast for Colombo, approximately 6-7 hours with comfort and lunch stops. Check in at Cinnamon Lakeside for a final night beside Beira Lake. The evening is free; this buffer protects the international departure from an excessively long same-day transfer.
Stay · Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo
Meals · Breakfast and dinner at the hotel
9
Departure
Private transfer to the airport in approximately 45-90 minutes, traffic dependent. For guests connecting onward to the Maldives or South India, timings can be designed around the selected flight rather than the standard departure morning.
