Hill Country

Nuwara Eliya

Cool 'Little England' tea country.

At nearly two thousand metres the air turns cold enough for log fires, and the British planters who laid out the tea built themselves a hill station to match — mock-Tudor bungalows, a racecourse and a golf course.

The tea estates around it are the real draw: steep green terraces, working factories and some of the finest high-grown leaf in the world.

Highlights

What you do here.

A working tea estate

From plucking to withering to tasting, walked through by someone who does it daily.

Horton Plains and World's End

An early start for the plateau walk and the cliff that drops away into cloud.

The hill-country train

The Nanu Oya leg through tea terraces and tunnels, in a reserved seat rather than a scrum.
